Dinner #20 on May 16, 2013

Light a Fire with IGNITE!

Seattle Girl Geek Dinners and IGNITE are excited to partner in our first fundraising event to support IGNITE’s mission: to educate and increase exposure of STEM related careers to young girls.

IGNITEâ„¢(Inspiring Girls Now In Technology Evolution) is a nonprofit educational program that addresses the lack of women in STEM related careers. Originally launched in the Seattle School District, IGNITE’s program connects school-age girls to professional women in STEM careers who act as role models and mentors. IGNITE’s founder, Cathi Rodgveller (M.S. Ed.), has been recognized multiple times for her inspirational work including the Anita Borg’s Social Impact Award in 2012 and the Women’s eNews “21 Leaders for the 21st Century” in 2009. Since 1999, IGNITE has grown from a local presence in Seattle Public Schools to internationally with chapters as far away as Nigeria. With Cathi’s leadership and hundreds of volunteers, IGNITE has touched the lives of over 20,000 girls.

Seattle Girl Geek Dinners community and IGNITE have formed a partnership to achieve the following:

Volunteerism: Increase the number of mentors and event volunteers for IGNITE programs
Company sponsorship: To seek financial endorsement from corporations for IGNITE programs to continue to grow and make an impact at a local and international level

It is our job, as a community to increase the the representation of women in STEM and support educational programs that inspire the next generation of women on the career options available to them in the fields of science and engineering.

Please join us for an evening of networking and fun, as we tour the Microsoft museum and hear the founder of IGNITE, Cathi Rodgveller, discuss the IGNITE mission, program, and how we, as a local women’s community can impact the future of women in STEM related careers. We’ll even hear directly from the IGNITE Alumni! Drinks and light refreshments will be served.

Thank you to PACE Staffing for sponsoring this event and making this fundraiser possible!

SGGD 2013 Community Announcements

Hello Seattle Girl Geeks!

I hope everyone has had a great start to 2013. Today, I am writing to the community to announce several exciting ways in which you can get involved with Seattle Girl Geek Dinners.

Since the community started, we have grown to 500+ women with the support of several local technical employers such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Amazon. However, we have so many talented, passionate women as part of SGGD, Stevi and I truly see an opportunity for us to evolve and expand our mission as a community.

Moving into 2013, we will be launching a Seattle Girl Geek philanthropy events program, which will give local girl geeks the opportunity to inspire younger women to consider and pursue STEM related careers. In addition, we have created volunteer opportunities to help with social media postings and securing sponsorship for future dinners.  As we continue to thrive as an organization which foster’s support and knowledge, our goal is to increase our outreach to younger women who may not yet know about the many possibilities of a career in technology and the sciences.

In order to meet our ambitious goals, we need your help. We will be creating a board of directors.  The board of directors will have responsibilities noted below.   As a part of this, SGGD will need a total of 8 volunteers to dedicate between 5-7 hours per month in one of the following areas:

  • Philanthropy/volunteerism: creating 2-3 event opportunities for our SGGD community to volunteer or give back to our community
  • Social media: updating our blog, posting to Facebook page, creating and maintaining email lists
  • Events: idea generation and securing of financial sponsorship for events

Please email me directly if you are interested in volunteering in one of these areas. My goal is to introduce our board of directors next month. For updates on events, please continue to visit our Facebook page. Once I find a volunteer to create an email distribution list, I will let everyone know so they can join.

Lastly, I would like to highlight our most immediate need, which is sponsorship for 2013 events. If you work for a company that hasn’t sponsored and have questions on cost or logistics, please reach out to me. I would be happy to answer questions and help out in any way.

Looking forward to seeing you soon! Thank you again for your help with delivering our mission.

Liz and Stevi
